IELTS Graph Tutorial: Writing a Complex Sentence

Learn how to write a complex sentence for an IELTS line graph. It is common to be given a line graph to describe the main trends of the lines. This video tutorial shows you step by step how to write a complex sentence structure of over 25 words.

If you are aiming for band score 6 or above, you need to use complex sentences for your line graph description. This lesson will help you learn what information to put in your complex sentence. The complex sentence in this lesson is typical of a sentence used in a body paragraph.

Sentence Content

  • subject
  • verb
  • adverb
  • difference of amounts
  • numbers
  • dates

All sentences in the body paragraphs should be complex and must be supported by data. This means the sentences must have numbers and dates if you wish to get a high score.

  7. Hello Liz,

I wanted to ask you about the video above, which was supposed to be about the use of complex vocabulary. Unfortunately I was unable to watch it since it says that this video is for private use. But from the posts above I can see that students were actually able to watch it online. So, could you tell me if you had changed the option for private use of there is sth wrong with my browser. If yes it is private, can you tell me if there is anyway I could still watch it?

  10. Hi Liz,
Greetings from Bangladesh ! I must say this is a very informative blog for all levels of people practicing IELTS at home. But in this video, you have placed 2000 erroneously, in between 2009 and 2010 in x-axis. Otherwise everything is okay.
    All the best.

  11. Hi Liz.
Can I put this information in the introduction?

    • This information is for the body paragraphs which contain the detail. Please see my model task 1 on the writing task 1 page.
      Liz

  12. Hi Liz,

Not to be rude, in your clip, I saw you used “the amount of people” to rephrased “the number of people” in the description. Is there any explanation for it?

    Many thanks!
    Thanh

    • Hi Thanh, I’ve been meaning to remove this video and replace it. While some people use “amount ” relating to people (it is increasingly common these days), there are examiners who won’t accept it so I must remove it. Sorry, for the confusion.
      Liz

  14. Hi Liz,

Can I write ” The amount of people decided to start a vegetarian diet ” rather than ” The amount of people deciding to start a vegetarian diet “??
    Thank you so much.

  15. Hello Liz,
Its a wonderful site to learn and prepare for IELTS.It would be grateful if you could help me in clarifying some doubts which I have in your lessons.I do have a dilemma whether to use “amount” to indicate people and the other one is ” units are measured”[though it happened in the past years 2000].Please explain how could it be possible.

    • It is best not to use “amount” with people. “Units are measured in ” is always written in the present passive because it refers to the current graph seen on the page.
      All the best
      Liz
